Textbook Linear Algebra with Applications by Steven J. Leon, Fifth Edition.

Course description
The course covers basic linear algebra concepts such as linear equations, matrices, determinants, vector spaces, bases, linear transformations and similarity, inner product spaces, eigenvectors, orthogonal bases, diagonalization. Compared to previous linear algebra courses such as MAT242, this course has a more rigorous approach that emphasizes more theoretical aspects including proofs.
Tests/Quizzes
200 pts Quizzes, Homework
Quizzes are given randomly. No make up. Homework will be collected on a regular basis and selected problems will be graded. Homework problems are listed on the syllabus. Possible changes in the homework will be announced in class and posted on the web page. Because of the fast pace of the class no late homework will be accepted.
  Extra Credit
Extra credit assignments may be given from time to time. Check the MAT342 web page.
2 x 100 pts 2 one-hour in-class tests
Make-up exams may be given only in case of a documented emergency (provided the instructor is promptly notified).
150 pts Final Exam

550 pts
Cut-offs
A: 90%, B: 80%, C: 70%, D: 60%.
Suggestions for study:
Although the course is maybe conceptually less difficult than calculus it most certainly requires a lot of work. The most effective way to study is in a study group of members from class. Working on assigned problems and class attendance are essential to survive .
Note:
Graphing calculators are not allowed on quizzes and tests unless otherwise specified by the instructor.
