a round table discussion by attendees of the
Mathematics and Cognition Seminar.  The topic will be:

"Modeling the Emergence of Sociality"

Abstract.
A point of view which has been espoused by the complex systems community is that a range of complex adaptive phenomena from intellegence to sociality are emergent properties of systems of individual agents interacting with each other and their environment via simple discrete decisions or rules.  We discuss this point of view in the context of sociality and contrast its efficacy versus standard paradigms of probabilistic and dynamical system models, and various types of hybrid modeling schemes.  As incitement to the discussion, please view the linked electronic discussion.
