Seminar Schedule:<http://math.la.asu.edu/~tom/cognition/math+cogsched.html>
On Tuesday, November 1, at 12:00 Noon in GWC 604,
the Mathematics and Cognition Seminar will
present a discussion with Dr.Peter Killeen of the Department of Psychology
on the topic of:

"Decision Theory for Statistical Inference in the Sciences: Beyond the nil Null"

Abstract:

I briefly review why Null hypothesis statistical tests (NHST) were a flawed solution to the problem of assigning a probability to a point statistic (e.g., a sample mean). I show why, under NHST, critical regions (alpha levels) should always be set to zero. I propose machinery for decision criteria (e.g., for publication) that incorporates both effect size and replicability. This last is in an early stage of development.
