Spring 2003

Tuesdays 12:15  Goldwater 604

Seminar Schedule:<http://math.la.asu.edu/~tom/cognition/math+cogsched.html>

On Tuesday, April 15, at 12:15 PM in GWC 604,
the Mathematics and Cognition Seminar will present
a
brief lecture by (almost) Dr. Root Gorelick of the Department of Biology.
The topic will be:

"Quantifying Division of Labor"

followed by a round table discussion.

Abstract.

Division of labor is considered one of the primary adaptations of
sociality.  Yet there exist no quantitative measures of division of
labor, hence no rigorous way to test hypotheses regarding division of
labor and its evolution.  We provide a statistic taking values between
zero and one that quantifies (i) task specialization of individuals and
(ii) dispersion of task performance between individuals.
