"Control of Social Networks"

Abstract

Members of a society often have a wide range of opinions. However, these opinions may change over time depending on the influence of other people's opinions. We will explore a simple dynamical model for the evolution of opinions and discuss some conditions under which consensus occurs. Some extensions of the basic model lead to the formation of clusters of opinions--different groups that disagree. Much work has gone into understanding the formation of these clusters, but we will look at the problem from a different point of view: If there is a cluster of people who all agree, what can we do to change their collective opinion?
