"Formation and Dynamics of Cooperative Networks: A Study of Gang Groups in Eloy Detention Center, AZ. Part II"
Abstract
In our earlier talk, we discussed the variable nature of gangs, gang members, street gangs, motives and incentives for membership. We briefly describe ethnic gang groups as well their characteristics. we then contrast collective group characteristics with the characteristics of the individual member.

In this talk, based on field experiences, we derive certain basic rules that govern "gang behavior" and/or "properties of gang groups " and briefly discuss the dynamics and evolution of urban gang groups.

Next, the basic rules that govern urban gang dynamics are compared and augmented by data collected at Eloy Detention Center. We document the role of ethnic and cultural affinity of gang behavior and gang network formation in EDC.

Finally, we present a preliminary model specific to Eloy Detention Center that mimics the dynamics ethnic gangs in EDC. The model simulates (1) gang groups as social networks involved in exclusionary internal cooperation and outside competition with others and (2) a (norm-reinforced) collective decision making process achieved via the network.
