Title: The Jones basic construction and cellular algebras

I will explain how ideas originating in operator algebras have also proved
useful in studying the structure and representation theory of non--semisimple
algebras such as the Brauer algebras and BMW algebras,  which can be viewed as
being built up by repeated Jones basic constructions.
