MAT 275 – Spring 2009

Modern Differential Equations

Labs and Handouts

Rate of Change Framework: Rate of change is the foundational concept for building models using differential equations and interpreting their solutions.

Functions Framework: The terminology and notation of functions will be the language of this course.

Error Analyses for the Euler and Runge-Kutta Methods: This covers the main ideas about bounding errors using the Euler and Runge-Kutta methods, a proof for the bound for the Euler method, adaptive step sizes, the relationships between local error, cumulative error and roundoff error, and the geometric interpretation of the Runge-Kutta method.

Lab 1: Slope Fields. You will also need to save dfield7.m in your MATLAB "Current Directory" in order to use it.

Lab 2: The Euler and Runge-Kutta methods. You will need to save euler.m, impeuler.m, and rk.m in your MATLAB "Current Directory" in order to use them.

Lab 3: Second order ODEs (linear and nonlinear).

Lab 4: Exploration of Linear Systems

Lab 5: Exploration of Nonlinear Systems
