TEXT:  Differential Equations, Computing and Modeling by Edwards and Penney, Pearson - Prentice Hall, 4th edition

GRADING: The semester grade will be computed from the Final exam (20%), 2 tests (25% each), and Labs/Quizzes/HW (30%).

GRADING SCALE: A+ >97%, A 93-96.9%, A- 90-92.9%, B+ 87-89.9%, B 83-86.9%, B- 80-82.9%, C+ 76-79.9%,

C 70-75.9%, D 60-69.9%, E <60%

FINAL EXAM: 8/3 during class time

MATLAB LABS: Matlab labs are especially important because they are worth a big part of the grade. Attendance is essential in order to pass the class. You are encouraged to work in groups on your assignments and MATLAB labs.

CALCULATORS: A graphing calculator is highly recommended (TI-83, TI-85, TI-86 or Casio 9800 series).  Calculators with QWERTY keyboards or those that do symbolic algebra such as the TI-89, and the TI-92 may not be used during an exam.

COURSE POLICIES: Students are responsible for assigned material whether or not it is covered in class. Students are responsible for material covered in class whether or not it is in the text. Working regularly on assigned problems and attending class are essential to survival. Homework (written part) will be collected at the beginning of the class.

No late HW will be accepted and no make-up quizzes will be given. Make-up exams are at the discretion of the instructor. In any case, no make-up exam will be given unless the student has notified the instructor before the test is given. Message may be left in the main office (965-3951) or through email. You must make every reasonable effort to notify me before the exam is given and document your reason for missing the exam.

ATTENDANCE is mandatory.

Students absent for university sponsored events must make arrangements for making up the work they will miss before they are absent.

WITHDRAWAL DEADLINES:

July 22, 2011           Course Withdrawal Deadline - In Person

August 5, 2011           Complete Withdrawal Deadline
(Beginning the first day of classes, undergraduate students must request a complete withdrawal in person.)

NOTE:  It is a student’s responsibility to verify that that they have in fact withdrawn from a class.

Please schedule an appointment to see me during office hours if you have a disability that will require accommodations in this class.

Note: To qualify for disability accommodations at ASU, students must qualify for services through the Disability Resource Center (DRC), which is located on the 1st floor of the Matthews Center Building. 480.965.1234 (V), 480.965.9000 (TTY).  Please  complete this process as soon as possible.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

In the “Student Academic Integrity Policy” manual, ASU defines “’Plagiarism” [as] using another's words, ideas, materials or work without properly acknowledging and documenting the source. Students are responsible for knowing the rules governing the use of another's work or materials and for acknowledging and documenting the source appropriately.”  You can find this definition at:

http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/studentlife/judicial/academic_integrity.htm

Academic dishonesty, including inappropriate collaboration, will not be tolerated. There are severe sanctions for cheating, plagiarizing and any other form of dishonesty.

HOMEWORK: There will be a combination of written homework and WeBWork, an on-line homework that gives instant feedback to the students on their answers. The URL is http://webwork.asu.edu/. We still encourage you to solve these problems first on paper. Click on Get hard copy to get a printout of the problems first.

Homework will be a very important part of your learning. You cannot expect to solve all assigned problems easily.  Some problems will require more time and effort. Even if you are unable to solve the entire problem, any time spent on trying is not wasted. Try to emphasize understanding rather than memorization when you are working on the problems.

I recommend that you form study groups to work together on the problems. You need to explain everything on your homework solutions for full credit. Expect to spend at least 6 – 10 hours weekly on homework.

TUTORING: At the Engineering Tutor Center in ECF 102.

(Homework problems may be added or deleted at the instructor's discretion)

NOTE: The instructor reserves the right to create class policies in regards to due dates, late assignments, etc. The syllabus is subject to change or revision at instructor’s discretion; announcements made in class are considered addenda to the syllabus.

Departmental and University Policies and Procedures

Departmental Drop Back: Based on advising from the course instructor, a student may elect to drop back to a lower level math course before the drop back deadline. The student should go to the Undergraduate Mathematics Office in PSA 211 to initiate a drop back request.

The grade of Incomplete: A grade of incomplete will be awarded only in the event that a documented emergency or illness prevents the student who is doing acceptable work from completing a small percentage of the course requirements. The guidelines in the current general ASU catalog regarding a grade of incomplete will be strictly followed.

Instructor-Initiated Drop: At the instructor's discretion, any student who has not attended class during the first week of classes may be administratively dropped from the course. However, students should be aware that non-attendance would NOT automatically result in being dropped from the course. Thus, a student should not assume they are no longer registered for a course simply because they did not attend class during the first week. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of their registration status.

Final Exam Make-up Policy: The final exam schedule listed in the Schedule of Classes will be strictly followed. Exceptions to the schedule and requests for make-up examinations can be granted only by the Department Chair, Associate Department Chair or the Director of First Year Mathematics, and for one of the following reasons:

1. religious conflict (e.g., the student celebrates the Sabbath on Saturday)

2. the student has more than three exams scheduled on the same day as the math final

3. there is a time conflict between the math final and another final exam.

Incomplete:  If there is a last-minute personal or medical emergency, the student may receive a grade of Incomplete and make up the final within one calendar year. The student must provide written documentation and be passing the class at the time to receive an Incomplete. Make-up exams will NOT be given for reasons of a non-refundable airline tickets, vacation plans, work schedules, weddings, family reunions, and other such activities. Students should consult the final exam schedule before making end-of-semester travel plans. The Dean of the student’s college must approve any exceptions to these rules.

The grade of XE: A grade of XE is reserved for "failure for academic dishonesty." The grade goes on the student's transcript; the student needs to petition to have it removed after 1 year.

The grade of EN: A grade of EN is reserved for "failure due to excessive absences." The grade goes on the student's transcript.
