Fall 2001
MAT 578
FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS

Instructor: Jack Spielberg
Time: TTh, 9:15 - 10:30
Location: AED-62 (two floors down from Charlie's cafe)
Line Number: 74850

Course Description:

Topics may include locally convex topological vector spaces,
duality, compact operators, bounded and unbounded operators
on Hilbert space, spectral theorems. The syllabus will depend
on the interests of the participants.

Prerequisites: basic topology (basis, continuity, compactness),
measure theory (MAT 473 or 570), basic functional analysis
in Banach spaces (boundedness; Hahn-Banach, open mapping,
closed graph, uniform boundedness theorems; Hilbert space).

The lectures will be self-contained, for the most part. I will
not follow strictly any one text, so no specific textbook is
required. The first of the recommended texts will be available
in the bookstore, and I will try to put all of them on reserve in
Noble library. (Any) Other books on Functional Analysis will
also be useful.
