Learn about your community and the importance of civic engagement through coursework based upon your experiences tutoring and mentoring 4th – 6th grade children attending under-resourced schools. Design and implement fun learning activities focused on math. Reflective reading, writing, and discussion help you process and learn from your experience and correlate your service to your program of study and career goals. This course fulfills community service hours required by some programs and scholarships. No exams. PREREQ: MTE 180 or college math classes should be completed before taking this course.

No experience with children required — training is provided
Any ASU students of any major and any level (freshman-senior & grad students) may enroll
Hours listed include 30-minutes travel time to/from internship site
Transportation from the Tempe campus is available
Note: students earn course credit and satisfy General Studies "C" requirement for the academic coursework associated with MTE 402, not for the community service performed

Work with three - five children on their math skills and help them with their homework.
Prepare fun, interactive activities geared to the individual needs of your children (guidance and resources are available to help you prepare these activities)
Work with the same children the entire semester, allowing you to form a close, mentoring relationship.
Attend training seminars during the first two weeks of the semester (during regularly scheduled internship hours) to prepare you for working with your children
Complete course readings, written assignments, and discussions to assist you in reflecting upon and learning from your service experience. All course assignments submitted through Blackboard
