Questions & Answers Regarding the Midterm

Please take the time to study for the midterm - it's 20% of your grade!!

1) When and Where is my midterm?

Your MAT 117 Midterm is Mon, Tues or Wed, March 22, 23 or 24.  You can take it either of those days.

If you live locally, you will take the midterm in person at the ASU Math Testing Center.

It is on the ASU Main Campus, PSA 21 (The Math Building).  Please click on the link for a map of the campus if needed.  The PSA building (Physical Science building, A wing) is located at E5. Map

The testing center is open Monday through Thursday from 8 am - 8 pm (the last exam is handed out at 6:30 pm) and Friday from 8 am to 5 pm (the last exam is handed out at 3:30 pm).

Please note: It is very important that you get there before 6:30 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and before 3:30 pm on Friday.  Even if you are 1 minute past those times, the testing center will not under any circumstances let you take the exam.  Failure to show up on time is not a reason for not taking the exam, and you will not be granted a makeup exam.  Keep in mind also, some days there might be lines to get into the testing center so give yourself plenty of time to stand in line (if there is one) and get to the check in point by their cut off time.  (Even if you are in line before 6:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday but don't get to enter in by 6:30, you don't get an exam.)  Plan accordingly!

Please give yourself plenty of time to take the exam.  There is NO time limit.  You can stay as long as you want (until 5 minutes before closing time of the testing center) to take the exam.  Plan to give yourself at least 2 hours to take the exam.  (Don't squeeze it in between classes or work.  Plus, you might have to wait in line before entering the testing center.)  There is no reason why any student should say they didn't have enough time to take the exam.  Please plan your schedules accordingly!!

To enter the Math Testing Center you will need your ASU SUN CARD.  If you do not have your SUN CARD, you will not be allowed to enter the testing center - NO EXCEPTIONS.  If you happen to loose or misplace it, please go to the MU and you can buy a new one.  Once they see your card, you will be given an exam and a testing label to place on the cover sheet of the exam.  NOTE: You do not need a testing label to get into the testing center, ONLY YOUR ASU SUN CARD).  Please make sure my Name is on the front page before sitting down in the testing center.

You are allowed to take in your graphing calculator; except the types mentioned on the cover sheet.  You are NOT permitted to use a TI-89, TI-92, Casio FX-2 and any other graphing calculator that does symbolic algebra.

Please take a few minutes to read more about the Math Testing Center website at :
http://math.asu.edu/fym/tstcenter.html

If you do not live locally, you should have contacted me already and informed me of where you will be taking the midterm by filling out the appropriate on-line proctor request form.  Your exam will be there at the time you have scheduled with your proctor.

2) What do I need to bring to the midterm?

Please bring to the midterm the following:

a) Your ASU SUN CARD ID

b) Graphing Calculator (except any calculator which does symbolic algebra (i.e.:  TI-89, TI-92, Casio FX-2, etc.))

c) Pencils and erasers

d) a self-addressed stamped envelope with at 60 cents in postage.

3) What is on the midterm?

The midterm covers the material from 3.1-3.6, 4.1-4.3, 5.1-5.3, 5.5, 5.6 and Web Tests 1-3.  See Math 117 Midterm Concept List for a complete list of the topics for which you should prepare.

This information will change as the midterm is written:
Currently the midterm has 14 problems, and there are NO multiple choice problems on the midterm (Show all work). You will NOT be allowed to have any type of formula sheet or notes with you while you take the exam.

4) How should I prepare for the midterm?

All the concepts on the midterm are posted on the Math 117 Midterm Concept List.

For each concept listed, look them up in your text and/or on-line lecture notes for review.  Then, review/redo the problems in the homework and Web Tests that pertain to that concept.

Make a list of any concepts or problems you need help on and please get your questions answered (via me, on-line tutoring, or math tutor center).

You are not allowed to bring any formula sheet or notes into the exam with you, so make sure you memorize any formulas you might need.

Don't wait until the night before to study for the midterm!  There is a lot of material on the midterm, so start studying now.  I recommend studying/reviewing a few concepts every night until the midterm and give yourself time to get your questions answered.  Remember, the midterm is 20% of your grade!!!!

5) Will I get my midterm back?

You will get your exam back by mail:

You MUST bring a self addressed stamped envelope and turn it in with your exam.  Approximately 4 to 5 pages is one ounce.  The exam has 8 pages that are preprinted.  You need to put an appropriate amount of postage on the envelope to take care of any added scratch paper.

If you are taking your exam off campus (i.e. have already set-up arrangements with myself regarding your testing site), bring a self addressed stamped envelope with you and turn it in to your proctor at the testing time.  Please tell your proctor to include it in the envelope when they mail back to me.

6) When will midterm grades be posted?

Once I have completed grading all the midterm I will post grades off the same link I have been posting grades all semester (Link is located under the resources button for this course on myASU.)

I will send out an e-mail to the class once the grades have been posted.

Make-up Policy:

As stated in the syllabus, " makeups for the midterm are only given in the case of verified medical or other documented emergencies and the instructor must be notified before the testing period of the midterm ends. The instructor is not required to accommodate you."
