You understand that changes may be made to the syllabus in order to meet the needs of the students in the class and that it is your responsibility to attend class every time it meets to keep abreast of any such changes.

Important Deadlines:

There is a student solutions manual for the text (strongly recommend), and a CalcLabs with Maple manual (required). Both of these are in the bookstore.

We use the math department computer labs (ECA 221) for a several of our class meetings during the semester. ECA 221 contains Sun work stations and ECA 225 contains pc's (windows).  Maple works the same on both platforms. The labs are open in the evenings and on weekends for students to work on their own. The hours are: 6:30-10:00 on MTWTh, closed on Friday, and 12:00-4:00 on Sat/Sun.

Students don't need to use these labs to use Maple. Every computer in every IT computing site on campus has Maple. The locations and hours for the IT sites can be viewed at: http://www.asu.edu/it/fyi/sites/siteschedule.html

Departmental and University Policies and Procedures

Restricted Withdrawal. In order to withdraw during this period, the student must obtain the instructor’s signature. A grade of W will be assigned only if the student is doing acceptable work at the time of the request. Otherwise the student will receive an E.
Grade of Incomplete: A grade of incomplete will be awarded only in the event that a documented emergency or illness prevents the student who is doing acceptable work from completing a small percentage of the course requirements. The guidelines in the 2001-02 general ASU catalog regarding a grade of incomplete will be strictly followed.
Honor Policy: The highest standards of academic integrity are expected of all students. The failure of any student to meet these standards may result in suspension or expulsion from the University or other sanctions as specified in the University Student Academic Integrity Policy. Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to, cheating, fabrication, tampering, plagiarism or facilitating such activities. It is highly unethical to bring to your instructor's attention the possible impact of your mathematics grade on your future plans, including graduation, scholarships, jobs, etc.
Course Work:
Calculator:I will be using the Casio CFX-9850GB PLUS.You are free to use a TI graphing calculator, however it is your responsibility to learn how to use it.Class time will be spent on how to graph, plot points, find regression curves, numeric derivatives and numeric integrals, etc. only for the Casio.I highly recommend using the same calculator as I will be using this semester. Calculators with QWERTY keyboards or those that do symbolic algebra such as the TI-89, or the Casio FX2 or 9970G cannot be used in class or during an exam.
TECHNOLOGY: A graphing calculator will be required for homework and in class exams. Projects will be done on Maple in the computer lab. There will be an end of the year quiz on maple, given during the last lab of the school year.
Maple is installed at all of the computer sites on campus. It sometimes can be purchased in the Computing Commons store or in the bookstore. Order from
http://www.maplesoft.com/studentorder.html. A demo version of Maple Release 4 (it does not print) may be downloaded free from http://math.la.asu.edu/~joe/MAPLE.html
ATTENDANCEis required; parts of this class may be in a cooperative learning format. You will work in groups and part of your grade will be assigned to the group. You will be assigned group work in and out of class. Repeated absences (more than 4 unexcused) will result in lowering your grade in the course. Students absent for university sponsored events or must make arrangements for making up the work they will miss before they are absent.
HOMEWORK is required. Problems to be turned in are assigned in class. Reminder: the University catalog states that a minimum of 3 hours of homework should be completed for each hour of class. Late homework will not be accepted.
Note: The instructor reserves the right to create class policies in regards to due dates, late assignments, etc. The syllabus is subject to change or revision at instructor’s discretion; announcements made in class are considered addenda to the syllabus.

Math Testing Center:  The Mathematics Department Testing Center is in PSA 21 (basement).  In order to be admitted to the Testing Center each student must have a valid ASU "Sun Card" and an official testing center label.  The testing center is open 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. M-Th and 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Fri.  You must arrive before 6:30p.m. M-Th (3:30 Fri.), and the testing center employees are very prompt and unbending about locking you out!  Students should take exams as early as possible during the allotted time frame, as the center can get extremely busy late in the day.http://fym.la.asu.edu/~fym/TestingCenter/tstcenter.shtml

Final Exam: The final exam will be given in your regular classroom as scheduled in the ASU Schedule of Classes Fall 2003.  There will be no make-ups given for the final, and no finals will be rescheduled for personal reasons, including nonrefundable airplane tickets.

Math 270, 271, 272 and 274 students should seek help from their teacher, although they can also get help at theEngineering Tutor Center in ECF 102 (right across from the Engineering Copy Center and close to Palm Walk).
