General

There are 54 faculty members in the department. Department members are actively engaged in research in the following areas: applied mathematics; mathematical physics; mathematical modeling; mathematical biology; mathematical neurobiology; bifurcation analysis; dynamical systems; control theory; nonlinear analysis; ordinary and partial differential equations; integral equations; computational mathematics; real, complex, and functional analysis; operator algebras; operator theory; algebra; number theory; topology; discrete mathematics; probability; theoretical and applied statistics; mathematical education. Research interests of the current members of the Committee on Statistics include the following: regression, variance components, generalized linear models; multivariate analysis, latent structure models, categorical data analysis; time series analysis, statistical process control, statistical decision support systems; statistical computing, statistical graphics; panel data analysis, complex sampling designs; decision-theoretic methods, risk assessment. Students and faculty have access to excellent computing facilities, including mainframes and personal computers running a broad selection of software.

The Daniel E. Noble Science Library, a member of the Center for Research Libraries, has a very good holding of mathematical texts and journals; its operations are fully computerized to aid in literature searches.

The Central Computing Services facilities are offered at no charge to the University community for use in academic pursuits. The University has two IBM mainframes, several clusters of high-performance UNIX workstations and is moving to a distributed computing environment. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has an advanced computing facility based on Unix/Linux servers and workstations. This includes a new 64bit AMD Opteron (2.4GHz) dual-processor Linux cluster with 18 nodes, a server (together 38 CPUs), and a RAID disk array. Each node has 8GB RAM. ROCKS Cluster Distribution is installed. In addition there is a 4-processor SUN V480 with 16GB RAM, 2 SUN SB 1000, several older SUN Ultra60 workstations, and an older 24-processor 24 GB HPC Sun E6500 server. In addition, there are several top of the line Linux workstations and Intel-based Linux clusters with RAID device running OpenMosix/Linux. These systems are housed in two separate computer labs, one with a dedicated 30 kVA UPS, and both with separate air conditioning units.

All machines as well as two high-resolution color laser printers, two fast black and white laser printers, a high resolution scanner, and other peripherals are networked with fast 1GB or 100 Mbps ethernet. A large selection of high-performance computing software is available.

Computing Facilities

The Math Department maintains 3 undergrad computer labs and 3 grad computer labs.The undergrad labs are mainly for teaching.

Besides the computer labs,each student office has at least one PC(Linux or Windows)for academic use. The Department has 2 light weight portable projectors and a few laptops for talks or class use.
