News ArchivesGlenn Hurlbert wins MAA Distinguished Teaching Award for the Southwest Section04/26/2007 Glenn Hurlbert was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award for the Southwest section of the Mathematical Association of America for 2007. Glenn nnie and John Selden Award is not only a particularly valuable teacher, but has created and helped run AMUC, an annual conference for undergraduate research. This is the second year in a row that the MAA sectional teaching award has gone to a teacher at ASU. Department joins IMA04/13/2007 ASU, through the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Fulton College of Engineering, has become a participating institution of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), in Minneapolis. Faculty at participating institutions have better access to travel funds to IMA programs, for bringing faculty from other IMA related institutions in for visits, and for organizing conferences. Graduate students win Fulbright Fellowships04/12/2007 John Pierre Fortney and Antonio Rubio have been awarded Fullbright Fellowships. They are both doctoral students in the department. Fortney will study in the Netherlands while Rubio will use his to study in Spain. Glenn Hurlbert speaks in the Last Lecture Series04/10/2007 The Last Lecture Series honors exceptional teachers from across campus This year Glenn Hurbert was selected and his lecture, "Is 42 really the answer?", will be held on April 23 at 7pm in the Memorial Union Pima Room. Glenn Hurlbert wins first Faculty Achievement Award04/04/2007 Glenn Hurlbert is a 2007 winner of the Faculty Achievement Award in Student Mentoring. These awards celebrate the top intellectual contributions at ASU in four general areas: Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities, Excellence in Teaching/Instruction, Excellence in Design Imperative for the New American University, and Excellence in Service. This is the first year the awards have been given. Graduate Student wins ARCS scholarship02/08/2007 Lydia Bilinsky, a graduate student in the department, was awarded a scholarship by ARCS, Achievement Rewards for College Students. The ARCS Foundation supports academically talented students majoring in the fields of natural science, medicine, and engineering. Local student is a semifinalist in the Siemens' high school science and mathematics competition01/24/2007 Veronica Shi was a semifinalist in the Siemens' high school science and mathematics competition. She was the only student from Arizona to make it so far in the competition. Her project on HIV was directed by Abdessamad Tridane, a faculty member in the department. Glenn Hurlbert selected as a Barrett Honors Visiting Fellow11/02/2006 Congratulations to Glenn Hurlbert for his selection as one of the two 2007 Barrett Honors Visiting Fellows. This is great news and should help the Department establish stronger contacts and collaboration with the Barrett Honors College. This well deserved recognition of her success as a superb teacher, and for her contributions to our teacher training program. Susanna Fishel to join the faculty05/13/2006 Susanna Fishel will join the department faculty in the Spring of 2007 as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Fishel's research is in algebraic combinatorics, more specifically on Brauer's algebras and Macdonald polynomials. After earning her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, she was on the faculty at Southern Connecticut State University before working for several years in industry at Mental Images in Berlin, Germany. Yan Yang to join the faculty05/02/2006 Yan Yang will join the department faculty in Fall 2006 as an Assistant Professor upon completion of her Ph.D. degree in Statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her dissertation work in the area of mixture models for bounded data has been carried out under the supervision of Doug Simpson. Brisa Sanchez to join the faculty05/02/2006 Brisa Sanchez has accepted an Assistant Professor position in the department and will join the faculty after completion of post-doctoral work at the University of Michigan. Brisa will receive her Ph.D. from the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard School of Public Health this summer. Her dissertation research concerning latent variable and structural equation models has been carried out under the supervision of Louise Ryan. Department graduate student awarded NSERC fellowship03/25/2006 Math department graduate student Eunha Alicia Shim has been awarded a 2-year fellowship by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada in support of her studies at ASU. Ms. Shim is a Ph.D. student working on rotavirus epidemic modelling with Dr. Castillo-Chavez. 02/24/2006 Math Awareness Month for 2006 is on Mathematics and Internet Security. Planning for ASU's festivities have begun. (more) Department participates in new Interdisciplinary Atmospheric Sciences Certificate Program02/08/2006 The Interdisciplinary Atmospheric Sciences Certificate is a new certificate program for students enrolled in other graduate programs at ASU to do interdisciplinary work, especially in high performance computing of environmental flows. Department faculty member Alex Maholov is part of the Executive Committee of the program.
