On Monday, January 26, 2009, the ASU Academic Senate voted 86% in favor to establish the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. The school proposal now goes to Provost Betty Capaldi for final approval.

Professor Castillo-Chavez honored with Mentor Award

02/13/2008 Congratulations to Professor Castillo-Chavez for receiving the 2007 AAAS Mentor Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Professor Castillo-Chavez has been honored for his effort to help underrepresented students succeed in their graduate studies. The award was presented during the 2008 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston. Marilyn Carlson awarded 2008 Annie and John Selden Award

01/09/2008 Marilyn Carlson has been selected by the MAA Board of Governors as the 2008 Annie and John Selden Award winner. This is a prestigious prize awarded every 2 years for "a significant record of published research in collegiate mathematics education." The prize will be awarded at the 2008 Mathfest in Madison, WI, July 31- Aug. 2.

Ph.D. Program in Mathematics Education ranked 14th

10/30/2007 The Ph.D. program in Mathematics Education was ranked 14th in the recent AMS Doctoral Programs in Mathematics Education in the United States: 2007 Status Report (AMS Notices, 50, 10, 2007, 1283-1293).

Undergraduate math students go to AMUC

05/02/2007 ASU undergraduates David Hayden, Ilyssa Summer, Jonathan Mullen, Kate Mullen, Micah Mangione, Miguel Sanchez, Parnell Maxwell, Steven Rosenthal, and Russell Latterman gave talks at the 4th Arizona Mathematics Undergraduate Conference held recently at Western New Mexico University in Silver City. Glenn Hurlbert served on the organizing committee and gave a plenary lecture. ASU students presented talks on projects supervised by department faculty Anne Gelb, Matthias Kawski, Pat Thompson, Yang Kuang, Alex Mahalov and Basil Nikolaenko.

Glenn Hurlbert wins MAA Distinguished Teaching Award for the Southwest Section

04/26/2007 Glenn Hurlbert was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award for the Southwest section of the Mathematical Association of America for 2007. Glenn nnie and John Selden Award is not only a particularly valuable teacher, but has created and helped run AMUC, an annual conference for undergraduate research. This is the second year in a row that the MAA sectional teaching award has gone to a teacher at ASU.

Department joins IMA

04/13/2007 ASU, through the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Fulton College of Engineering, has become a participating institution of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), in Minneapolis. Faculty at participating institutions have better access to travel funds to IMA programs, for bringing faculty from other IMA related institutions in for visits, and for organizing conferences.

Graduate students win Fulbright Fellowships

04/12/2007 John Pierre Fortney and Antonio Rubio have been awarded Fullbright Fellowships. They are both doctoral students in the department. Fortney will study in the Netherlands while Rubio will use his to study in Spain.

Glenn Hurlbert speaks in the Last Lecture Series

04/10/2007 The Last Lecture Series honors exceptional teachers from across campus. This year Glenn Hurbert was selected and his lecture, "Is 42 really the answer?", will be held on April 23 at 7pm in the Memorial Union Pima Room.

Glenn Hurlbert wins first Faculty Achievement Award

04/04/2007 Glenn Hurlbert is a 2007 winner of the Faculty Achievement Award in Student Mentoring. These awards celebrate the top intellectual contributions at ASU in four general areas: Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities, Excellence in Teaching/Instruction, Excellence in Design Imperative for the New American University, and Excellence in Service. This is the first year the awards have been given.

Graduate Student wins ARCS scholarship

02/08/2007 Lydia Bilinsky, a graduate student in the department, was awarded a scholarship by ARCS, Achievement Rewards for College Students. The ARCS Foundation supports academically talented students majoring in the fields of natural science, medicine and engineering.

Local student is a semifinalist in the Siemens' high school science and mathematics competition

01/24/2007 Veronica Shi was a semifinalist in the Siemens' high school science and mathematics competition. She was the only student from Arizona to make it so far in the competition. Her project on HIV was directed by Abdessamad Tridane, a faculty member in the department.

Glenn Hurlbert selected as a Barrett Honors Visiting Fellow

11/02/2006 Congratulations to Glenn Hurlbert for his selection as one of the two 2007 Barrett Honors Visiting Fellows. This is great news and should help the Department establish stronger contacts and collaboration with the Barrett Honors College.

Apple Bloom wins MAA SW Section Distinguished Teaching Award

06/23/2006 Apple Bloom, who is a Faculty Associate in the department, was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award for the Southwest section of the Mathematical Association of America for 2006. This well deserved recognition of her success as a superb teacher, and for her contributions to our teacher training program.
