The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Arizona State University invites applications to its Ph.D. program in Mathematics. ASU has very active research groups in analysis, number theory with algebra and discrete mathematics. Students making satisfactory academic progress in the Mathematics Ph.D. program will receive five years of financial support either as teaching or research assistants. The stipends are competitive. Summer assistance is also often available.
This degree is intended for students with superior mathematical ability. It emphasizes a solid mathematical foundation and promotes creative scholarship in mathematics.Applicants must submit the Graduate College online application. Minimum background for consideration of admission to the graduate program in mathematics includes a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a closely related area with a 3.00 GPA (4.0 scale), and course work in linear algebra (equivalent to ASU course MAT 342) and advanced calculus (equivalent to ASU course MAT 371). Students who are deemed to have a weak background in linear algebra and/or analysis must take appropriate action, as determined by the Graduate Committee, to remedy the deficiency. The General GRE is required.
