First-Year Math Placement Test

ASU requires all incoming freshmen to complete a placement exam for mathematics prior to orientation in order to determine the appropriate math course for enrollment. Students whose degree objective does not include precalculus must take the Unified Placement Test (UPT) while those who expect to enroll in precalculus or higher math during their first semester must take the ALEKS Calculus Placement Exam prior to orientation. Placement into MAT 170, Precalculus, may be achieved by either UPT or ALEKS.

Critical Information About Math Placement

  • Students must take the UPT no later than 72 hours before attending orientation. Those who attend orientation without having taken the exam will not be allowed to register for classes.
  • The Unified Placement Test can be taken a maximum of two times.
  • The test scores are only valid for one calendar year.
  • All students are strongly advised to take the online practice test before attempting the exam. ASU also holds math refresher workshops on campus for students who would like additional assistance with reviewing key concepts.

How to take the mathematics Unified Placement Test (UPT):

  1. Before you start, disable the Windows firewall and be sure to clear the private data, browsing history and cache in your browser.
  2. First, take the practice test.
  3. When you are ready, click here to take the placement test.
  4. Figure out what your score means.
  5. Print your score and keep for your records.

Note: The online placement test requires your ASURITE User ID and Password, which are included in your application confirmation letter. For help activating your user ID, click here.

If the placement test system appears to be down or not working at all please check for outage information at www.asu.edu/systemstatus.

Students who score below 60 on the UPT must enroll in Intermediate Algebra through the Math Refresher Program during their first semester at ASU. Intermediate Algebra strengthens math skills and prepares students for the rigors of college mathematics. It is taught by the Maricopa Community Colleges on the ASU campuses.

If your major requires precalculus or higher, scroll down to the "Majors Requiring Precalculus" table. All other students, please use the "Majors not requiring calculus" table.

Majors not requiring calculus

For students whose major requires completion of MAT 142 College Mathematics

(View your major's critical requirements to verify your math requirement)

Score Required Course
0 - 59 Intermediate Algebra
Taught at ASU by the Maricopa Community Colleges. For more information on this requirement, click here.
60 or higher MAT 142 College Mathematics, MA

Majors requiring Precalculus or higher

For students whose major requires Finite Math, Pre-Calculus, or higher

Score Required Course
0 - 59 Intermediate Algebra
Taught at ASU by the Maricopa Community Colleges. For more information on this requirement, click here.
60 - 74 MAT 117 College Algebra
(Credit is not awarded for ASU's General Studies, mathematical studies)
75 or higher MAT 119 Finite Math, MA or MAT 170 Precalculus, MA
Your placement depends on degree program requirements and credit upon entry. See your academic advisor to determine the correct math class for you.
For higher-level math courses Students considering any of the other first-semester calculus courses such as MAT 210 Brief Calculus, MAT 251 Calculus for the Life Sciences, MAT 265 Calculus for Engineers I or MAT 270 Calculus I, need to take the ALEKS Calculus Placement Exam.
