MAT 170 - Precalculus

Spring 2010

  • Background: It is essential that students in MAT 170 have a command of basic algebraic skills such as factoring, basic equation solving, and thorough knowledge of the rules of exponents and radicals.
  • Purpose: MAT 170 is intended to prepare students to take MAT 270 (Calculus I) or MAT 265 (Engineering Calculus I). Hence the course emphasizes the fundamental concept of a function throughout. Precalculus is also the only course offered that teaches trigonometry. Some majors have a trigonometry requirement which can only be satisfied by completing MAT 170. MAT 170 does not fulfill the ASU numeracy requirement for graduation.
  • Syllabus: A suggested syllabus is Syllabus (doc). Your instructor may use a different syllabus. Check with your instructor.
  • Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Instructors will take attendance on a regular basis. For classes that meet three days a week (MWF, for example), the maximum number of allowed absences is six (6). For classes that meet two days a week, the maximum number is four (4). For classes that meet on other schedules the number of absences allowed should reflect a similar ratio (two weeks worth of class meetings). Students who exceed the number of allowed absences will receive a grade of EN. The grade, EN, indicates failure in the course because of lack of satisfactory attendance.
  • Classroom Environment: The course is closely coordinated, insuring a uniform experience for all students. Instructors work to create an interactive atmosphere where active learning can take place. Students often work in groups during class time and sometimes work together on outside projects.
  • Testing Center: The Mathematics Testing Center is located in PSA-21 (basement). For exams given there you will need your ASU SunCard to be admitted. The hours are M-Th 8 am to 8 pm (last test handed out at 6:30) and Fridays from 8 am to 5 pm (last test handed out at 3:30 pm). You can find more information at Testing Center Information.
  • Tutor Center: The Math Tutor Center is located In PSA-116 and offers free, quality tutoring. In order to be admitted, you must bring your SunCard . There is more information at Tutor Center Information .
  • HAV Math Tutor Center: Free, quality tutoring in math is also available on the second floor of HAV Building F. Math tutors will be available between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm Monday through Friday.
  • Assessment: In addition to traditional tests, instructors may use a mixture of homework, quizzes, projects, assignments, and attendance.
  • Homework: Your instructor may be using Webwork, MyMathLab, or something else for online homework. Your instructor may assign homework from the text. Check with your instructor for your homework requirements. Students are responsible for reading each section before it is taught in class. Quizzes and projects will be given at the discretion of the instructor. To further encourage regular attendance (see attendance policy in this syllabus), instructors need not announce the dates that quizzes are to be given in advance. No late quizzes need to be accepted.
