Cooperative University
School Program
By Matt Isom
Fall 1998 marks the inaugural
year for our Mathematics Department's CUSP program. Suzette Takas
and Ted Coe have joined our staff for the 98-99 academic year. Each
of these master teachers bring years of teaching experience and expertise
to our department. both are busy making the most of their time here at
ASU. Suzette is currently teaching Pre-calculus and College Algebra
courses, enrolled in MAT 598 (Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education
I), and is also going to co-coordinate MAT 170 (Pre-calculus) in the spring.
Ted is having fun teaching two first semester calculus classes and is also
enrolled in MAT 598.
Both are enrolling in Dr. Carlson's
follow-up course Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education II and
are considering expanding their breadth of mathematical knowledge by enrolling
in a pure mathematics course, possibly MAT 444 (Intermediate Abstract Algebra)
for the spring semester.
When asked "How do you like
here at ASU?". Suzette replied, "I love it!". One of
the many perks Suzette is realizing is here future opportunity to teach
higher level mathematics courses when she returns to Mountain View High
School. Ted really enjoys seeing the difference in how Calculus I
is taught here at ASU and what is taught at Mountain Pointe High School.
More importantly he is diligently making the most of his opportunity for
taking course work towards earning a Ph.D.
Overall, the CUSP program has
been a huge success. Each of these wonderful teachers are gaining
valuable hands on experience teaching mathematics at the college level,
participating in workshops, and interacting with the department faculty,
all of which presents a bigger context for the mathematics they teach at
their high schools. Experiences and stories they bring back to share
with their peers will certainly increase the number of applicants we have
for these positions next year.
