It is possible to use pictures to enhance your words.
When you are explaining how you do something with manipulative keep the
following things in mind:

Write a translation of the problem (the symbols have meaning).

Translate the symbols (numbers) into manipulatives.

If you do something, write what you did down (don't leave anything to the
imagination).

If you do something, tell why you did it (everything has a reason).
-
Translate the final manipulative picture into an answer in numbers.

Check that your answer is correct (you know how to do the problems without
manipulatives).
Manipulative tips:
-
For base 10 blocks show all trades. You can't rip the blocks
into pieces and you can't have more than 9 of any block at a time!
-
For two-colored chips, you can't flip them over!
